OHIO RIVER TRAIL COUNCIL
Stavich Trail — New Castle, PA to Struthers, Ohio
Stavich Trail 20-Mile Ride
Come out for a ride! This is part of a trail ride series sponsored by the Ohio River Trail Council (ORTC) intended to bring awareness to the wonderful trails in our quad-state region (Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia). All cyclists are welcome for this rails-to-trails, moderate-paced ride!
Join us, as we visit the Stavich Trail. The ride begins outside of New Castle in Coverts, PA through the town of Lowellville to Struthers, Ohio and then returns to Coverts, PA. Following along the former Youngstown-New Castle streetcar line, the trail takes riders through wooded countryside and over gentle hills, providing scenic views of the Mahoning River. In addition, for those who enjoy a longer ride, there is an additional 10+mile road ride to Youngstown, Ohio.

Features and Points of Interest:
The Stavich Trail was constructed in 1983 with the help of donations from the Stavich Family and local individuals. The trail is built on an interurban electric railroad right-of-way: the Penn–Ohio trolley line, which fell into disuse in 1933. The trail parallels the CSX active rail line; however, the two grades are very different. The CSX tracks remain on relatively flat terrain while the bike trail ascends and descends during its entire length. In the spring, there is an abundance of wildflowers to the trail's edge, along with yellow dogwood. The trail also boasts a wonderful Beaver Pond, which is excellent bird-watching territory. The Stavich Trail was designated a National Recreation Trail in 2003.
