Features and Points of Interest
The Wheeling Heritage Bicycle Tour is a fundraiser for trail expansion in Wheeling and the greater Ohio County area, which only needs to complete more segments, approximately 8 miles of trail, in order to have nearly 400 miles of contiguous trail from Wheeling to Washington DC. Wheeling, the “friendly city,” is historically industrious and is seeking to lead West Virginia in the way forward into the 21st century with education and infrastructure for alternative transportation, and sharing the road with cyclists.
The tour is a true community effort and is part of a larger schedule of events of the Memorial Day weekend celebration in Wheeling, which starts with the well-known Annual Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon.
The proposed Ohio River Trail beginning at Coraopolis links the Montour Trail to the 110-mile Great Ohio Lake-to-River Greenway in Ohio forming approximately a 500-mile contiguous mega-trail system from the Great Lakes Region to our nation’s capitol!
